Introduction¶
This guide is an additional guide to the Portal user’s documentation aimed at Portal system administrators who will have additional access above and beyond normal users. Please read the user’s documentation as an overview to basic system capabilities before reading this guide and before using Portal.
Recommended environment¶
Portal runs as a web service on either port 80 or if using HTTPS, port 443. It is up to the system provider to setup the webserver software and any certificates needed.
We recommend to use modern browsers with the user to achieve optimal results and certain aspects of the system such as the metadata editor require to use one of the follow:
- Google Chrome
- Mozilla Firefox 21 or later
- Apple Safari 7 or later
- Internet Explorer 11 or later
We use a HTML5 video player for playing back content on webbrowsers that support HTML5 video tag, and for media that is set to the correct codec. If the codec is not correct, or the browser doesn’t support HTML5 video tag, we drop back to a player which uses the Adobe Flash plugin. This flash compatibility will be removed in future versions. Features such as time accurate playback, frame-forward and frame-backwards is disabled when the Flash player is used as the technology doesn’t support this.
Microsoft Internet Explorer Version 9 (IE9). Internet Explorer 8 and below are deprecated and although there are special considerations put in place for uploading files, and viewing media content these are now considered deprecated and can be removed without warning. It is recommended that you use Google Chrome, Google Chrome Frame or update from this version as it is now unsupported by Microsoft. IE8, IE7 and IE6 are not officially supported at all and if you need to use them then Google ChromeFrame is a prerequisite.
The system works best with the following OS:
- Windows 7
- Windows 8
- Windows 10
- Mac OS X 10.7 or later
